Good quality, good price

Everyone loves a good deal, and you do not need expensive brand names to travel well. This guide covers the luggage and travel essentials that make a trip to India easier, and what to look for so you get something that lasts without overpaying.

How to spot a good budget buy

  • Choose items with a high rating from many reviewers, not just a few.
  • Read the low-star reviews. They show what breaks first (often wheels, zips or handles).
  • Check the warranty and the return policy before you buy.
  • Big sales such as Prime Day, Black Friday and Boxing Day are good times to buy luggage.
  • Check your airline's baggage rules first. See our baggage allowance guide.

A large check-in suitcase

  • Look at the empty weight. A suitcase that weighs about 4 to 5 kg leaves more of your 23 kg for gifts and things for family.
  • Most airlines on India routes limit each checked bag to 158 cm in total (length + width + height). Check the size before you buy, because some "extra large" bags are over the limit.
  • Four spinner wheels and a strong telescopic handle make long airport walks much easier.
  • Bright colours are easier to spot on a busy baggage belt in Delhi or Mumbai.

A carry-on that fits the rules

  • Many airlines flying to India allow only 7 to 10 kg in the cabin, so a light bag matters.
  • Check your airline's size limit. A bag that fits one airline may be too big for another.
  • Keep medicines, documents, a change of clothes and chargers in your carry-on in case a checked bag is delayed.

Luggage sets (when the whole family is travelling)

  • A set of 2 or 3 bags is often cheaper than buying each one separately.
  • Make sure the largest bag in the set is within 158 cm in total. Some sets include a bag that is too large for most airlines.
  • Check the warranty. Good budget brands often give several years of cover on the shell and wheels.

A digital luggage scale

  • One of the cheapest ways to avoid overweight fees, which can cost far more than the scale.
  • Weigh your bags at home, and again before you fly back from India with everything family gives you.

TSA-approved luggage locks

  • If you fly to or through the USA, security officers can open these locks without cutting them.
  • Cable locks work well on zippers. Pick a set of two or four so every bag is covered.

Packing cubes and compression bags

  • Keep clothes, gifts and kids' things separate, so you are not unpacking everything at the airport check-in desk.
  • Compression cubes save space, but they do not reduce weight. Keep using your scale.

A travel adapter for India

  • India uses plug types C, D and M, at 230 volts. A universal adapter that includes these types covers you.
  • Most phone and laptop chargers say "100-240V" and work fine with just an adapter. Hair dryers and straighteners often do not, so check the label.

Comfort for the long flight

  • Flights to India are often 14 to 22 hours door to door. A neck pillow, eye mask and earplugs make a real difference.
  • Compression socks help with swelling on long flights. Ask your doctor if you have circulation concerns.
  • An empty reusable water bottle can go through security and be filled up near your gate.

Luggage tags, straps and trackers

  • A bright strap or tag helps you find your bag quickly and stops someone taking it by mistake.
  • A small Bluetooth tracker inside your bag shows you where it is if it does not arrive with you.
  • A foldable duffel bag takes almost no space and is handy for bringing extra things home from India.
