Handling Your Mail While You Are in India
Long stay with family? How to keep getting your Canadian or US mail: post office options, family help, and virtual mailboxes.

Who this guide is for
- You are spending a few months in India with family, for a wedding, or to look after parents.
- You split your year between Canada or the USA and India.
- You are moving to India for a while but still have bank accounts, taxes or benefits back home.
- Your parents visit you here and get mail while they are back in India.
- You do not want important letters piling up at an empty house, or in a mailbox anyone can see is full.
Your three main choices
Hold or forward your mail with the post office
Canada Post and USPS both offer paid services that hold your mail for a while or forward it to another address. This works well for shorter trips. Mail sent to India by regular post can be slow, so it is less useful for longer stays.
Ask family or a trusted friend
Free and simple, if someone close by can collect your mail and tell you what arrives. It depends on them having time to open, read or photograph letters for you.
Use a virtual mailbox
A virtual mailbox gives you a real street address. Your mail arrives there, the company scans the envelope, and you choose online whether to open and scan it, forward it, or shred it. You can read your mail from anywhere in India on your phone.
PostScan Mail
PostScan Mail is an established virtual mailbox company with addresses in many cities across the USA and Canada. You pick an address, then manage your letters and packages online while you are in India: scan, forward, shred or deposit cheques.
- US addresses: USPS requires a notarized Form 1583 before mail can be received. Plan to do this before you leave, while a notary is easy to find.
- Canadian addresses: instead of Form 1583, you send PostScan Mail its verification form with two pieces of ID.
- Compare plans by how many letters you get each month and whether you need forwarding to India.
Before you fly: a quick checklist
- Sign up for online mail with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA My Account) or your US tax and benefit accounts, so fewer letters are posted to you.
- Switch bank and credit card statements to paperless.
- Tell your bank and card companies you will be in India, so your cards are not blocked.
- Think about your passport and PR card dates. If one expires while you are away, you may need mail to reach you quickly.
- Update your address with anyone who sends you important paper mail before you leave.
Keep your ID safe. Only give ID documents to the mailbox company through its own website, never by email to someone you do not know. Prices and rules change, so always check the provider's website before you sign up.
