A 14-18 hour flight with children requires planning. Here's how to make it manageable.
Choosing the Right Airline
Air India and Emirates are generally the most family-friendly for India flights. Air India offers Indian meals that kids are familiar with, and Emirates has the best in-flight entertainment system (ICE) with a huge kids' section. Qatar Airways and Etihad also score well for families.
Bassinet Seats
For infants under 2, request a bassinet seat when booking. Bulkhead row bassinets are available on Air India (Boeing 787), Air Canada (787), and Emirates (A380/777). Book early โ there are only 2-4 bassinets per cabin. Weight limits: typically 10-11 kg.
What to Pack in Your Carry-On
Essential items: snacks (goldfish crackers, fruit pouches, granola bars), entertainment (tablet loaded with shows, coloring books, sticker books), comfort items (favorite blanket, stuffed animal), change of clothes for each child, children's Gravol/Dramamine, wet wipes, and a few surprise toys wrapped like gifts.
Timing Your Flight
Evening departures (6-9 PM) are ideal โ kids sleep for the first 6-8 hours. Air India's Toronto-Delhi departs around 9:45 PM, making it great for families. Avoid early morning departures that disrupt sleep schedules.
At the Airport
Arrive early for extra time. Most Canadian airports have family lanes at security. Request priority boarding for families (Air Canada, Emirates, and Qatar offer this). Let kids burn energy at airport play areas before boarding.
Managing Jet Lag
India is 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto. Start shifting bedtime 2-3 days before departure. On arrival, get kids outside in daylight immediately. Keep first 2 days low-key. Children under 5 typically adjust within 3-4 days.
